The Container Owners Association has today published its latest Technical Guideline – “TG-10: Photographic Image Quality for the M&R Assessment of Containers”.

Photographic images provide essential evidence of container damage and condition – and are firmly established within maintenance and repair processes. However, procedures and image standards can vary according to individual container owners’ requirements.

  • TG-10 sets out recommended criteria for producing clear, consistent and correctly identified photographic records.
  • High-quality images containing the required identification information can help improve the efficiency of container condition assessment, repair estimation and authorisation.

The Guideline also recognises the growing use of Artificial Intelligence within the container industry. AI-supported systems place greater demands on photographic quality, consistency, metadata and file identification when analysing container condition, producing repair estimates and supporting approval processes. Although automated gate-entry systems are expected to supply more images in future, manually captured photographs remain an important part of current M&R operations.

TG-10 provides guidance covering:

  • General principles and responsibilities
  • Photographic image quality
  • Metadata and file identification
  • Photographic records of container condition
  • Image storage, retention and security
  • Practical examples and supporting information

Not all container depots are sufficiently equipped to immediately meet all parts of this standard. However, container depots continue to invest in the development of processes and technology. This standard is recommended to be incorporated in those developments.
